Really? I never knew thats how they did it. So if I understand you right, alexa collect stats much like television stations collect stats. They give out reporters to a small percentage of the population, and then extrapolate those numbers to everyone else... Alexa collects stats from whoever installs their toolbar, and then extrapolates their stats out to the rest of the internet population to have a guess at what sites get the most traffic.
