I have been lurking on this site for about 2 months and appreciate all the great advice. Iíd like to do a little brain-picking if I may: the navigational structure of our web site was built by a design co. and I have been uploading the content for 3 sections of the site. The other parts of the site are being handled by co-workers, and I have no say in when they get their sections posted. We've deactivated some of the links to their sections for now, but they can still be accessed thru the site map, unfortunately.
We're an educational consortium, so we're not trying to drum up clients; we just want to provide online resources for our members. However, I would like to get some of our pages to show up higher on the SERP (learned that acronym from this forum!!) when certain keywords are entered, in case our members try to find us that way.
Iíve gotten a few backlinks from our members and I went back and added keywords to some of the alt tags - but there are very few pictures (for now), so that probably didn't help. Does the unfinished nature of our site have a negative effect on placement? I know some sites wonít link to us until itís completed, but is there anything else?
Iím an academic, not a tech person, so my skills are limited, but Iím willing to give it a go if any of you can suggest a way to improve the placement of our site. Iím using Dreamweaver MX (with CSS, but donít know much about how to edit CSS) and have WebTrends, in case that might affect any advice!
