As well as a lot of hours in the classroom, you may have to spend some time as an apprentice depending on your state. This will give you a chance to have training while you are on a job and really find out what it is like. You may have to spend at least two thousand hours doing apprentice type work, before you can be trusted to work on your own. You should probably get basic education first, but some people do work as apprentices before finishing all their classes.
