How to build a successful website
Contrary to what many people believe, creating a successful website does not begin with how you promote it. It starts from the very moment you begin to create the site.
To further explain, I am going to break my explanation of this down into various parts of the successful website production process with tips under each part.Part 1
- Creating the Website Shell
You have probably heard the word “optimization” thrown around a lot in reference to traffic building for your website. BUT, have you ever been coached on exactly HOW to go about optimizing your site and what doing so can do for you? Here are a few steps that you should follow beginning at DAY 1 of your website creation:Tip 1
: Choose or create a website template built with TABLES instead of FRAMES.
Believe it or not, these simple html tages make a big difference in how search engine spiders are able to crawl and index your website.
The <table> tags allow spiders to easily breeze from block to block of text on any given page and read the ENTIRE page, whereas the <frame> tags are essentially “brick walls” that spiders can not pass through. This would mean that there is a good chance that only a small portion of your page is being read and indexed.Tip 2
: Keep in mind that search engines read from left to right too.
Want to REALLY be sure that the important content of your website is read and indexed by the spiders? Then, your best bet is NOT to have the first bit of text that they read on the left side of your page be a sidebar menu full of hyperlinks directing them to other websites or other pages in your website right off the bat. If you want to add a sidebar menu to your website, it is really much better to have it placed on the right side so that the spiders peruse and index your page content before being guided elsewhere.Tip 3
: Meta tags and title composition matter.
If a well ranked site that generates tons of organic traffic is what you are after, you really need to take care to make good use of your meta tags and your website title. These little html snippets can mean the difference between being ranked on the first page of Yahoo or Google for your niche topic, or the 8th page…A) Meta Keywords
Meta Keywords are a compilation of words and/or phrases that best categorize your website. For example, if your website is a money making forum that discusses HYIPs, Autosurfs and MLM programs, than your meta keywords might be something like: money making forum, forum, HYIP, high yield investment programs, autosurf, mlm, multi-level marketing – something along those lines.
These keywords or phrases should be posted in the header section of your html coding for your website and should also be used extensively in your actual page content so that the search engines spiders pick up the relevancy of each term and can index your site accordingly under those terms.
You can almost think of these keywords as “hints” to the spiders on where you feel your website best fits in the search engines. Meta Description
The Meta Description of your website is a paragraph which explains exactly what your site is about. This description is actually what the search engines will use to index your site.
This description should be well detailed and to produce the best optimization results should include as many of your meta keywords as possible. For example, using the same idea of a money making forum and the keywords that we listed above, the meta description that you might use is:
“A Money making forum dedicated to discussion of topics ranging from high yield investment programs (HYIP) and autosurf programs to multi-level marketing (mlm).”C) The title
This piece of the html puzzle runs along the same guidelines of the meta description- it should be as descriptive as possible and laced with keywords. Sticking with our example, and assuming that the name of our forum is “Money Makers Forum”, the title may look something like this:
“Money Makers Forum- HYIP, Autosurf and MLM Discussion”
Now, putting ALL of this information together, here is what your actual html code that you place between the <head> tags would look like:
<TITLE>Money Makers Forum- HYIP, Autosurf and MLM Discussion</TITLE>
<META NAME=”description” CONTENT=”A Money making forum dedicated to discussion of topics ranging from high yield investment programs (HYIP) and autosurf programs to multi-level marketing (mlm)”>
<META NAME=”keywords” CONTENT=”money making forum, forum, HYIP, high yield investment programs, autosurf, mlm, multi-level marketing “>Part 2- Adding Your Content
Content is King. Ultimately, your content is what is going to draw people to your site and keep them coming back. So, here are a few tips to ensure that your content is helping you and not hurting.Tip 1
: Make sure the content is relevant to your overall theme.
This really shouldn’t need much explanation… If you are setting up a website related to money making, adding an article about cars doesn’t really add to the website relevancy.Tip 2
: Take care with spelling and punctuation.
Excessive misspells display carelessness on the part of the owner and can turn your prospective members/buyers in the other direction.Tip 3
: The more content, the better (as long as it’s relevant).
More articles/ posts means more keywords or phrases that related to your website which means more places that you will organically appear in the search engines.Part 3- Promotion
Well, here we are! The step that MOST people think is the very first step to creating a successful website: Promotion. Tip 1
- But…. Traffic is traffic, right?? WRONG!
The first step you should take in your promotional efforts is to consider who your target market is. You don’t just need traffic, you need traffic that is likely to return, so you must target those that would be interested in your niche or you are basically just throwing your advertising dollars out the window.Tip 2
- Give your website viewers/readers a good reason to come back.
Advertising for people to join your website’s newsletter to be sent special deals and freebees once in a while or offering an affiliate program through which they can earn cash are great ways to spark people’s interest and encourage them to be loyal patrons.Tip 3
- Viralize your efforts with a tell a friend script.
The easier it is for people to refer others to your site, the more likely it will happen. The tell a friend script is a great for this. Your members simply enter their friend’s name and email, click send and the custom invite message you created is mailed out. Tip 4
- Joint Ventures.
This is a promotional method frequently overlooked… Joint ventures are partnerships between two companies that are meant to benefit both companies through cross promotion. For example, two traffic exchanges might agree to join forces for a joint referral contest in which the winner would need to be the top promoter for both exchanges in order to win. This encourages the members of each traffic exchange to join the other and to promote both through joint splash pages at the same time. Tip 5
- Generating Backlinks.
This is an SEO related tactic… The more websites that search engine spiders find linking to your website, the more important it considers your site and the better rank you have.
When generating backlinks, keep in mind that all links are not created equal. There are plenty of services out there that offer reciprocal link building, which is great, but ideally the back links that you want are one-way links.
One-way back links insinuate importance to search engines. They imply that you have valuable information on your website and that it’s so valuable that other websites are openly encouraging their traffic to visit your site.
Signature advertising in forums or at the end of article submissions are one-way back linking, posting your referral link in a forum thread or a blog are also ways to generate one-way backlinks so, it’s something that is fairly easy to do.Part 4: Website Upkeep
Getting the site off the ground is the hardest part, but once it has become successful, you still need to work to keep it that wayTip 1
: Consistently try to improve upon what you have created.
You can’t just set up a website and expect your members not to get bored with it. You need to constantly look for ways to improve- even if you think you have the ultimate website, I guarantee that there is SOMETHING that you can introduce and offer your membership to make it even better. Even something as simple as changing the appearance can “spice” things up!Tip 2
: Good customer support is a MUST.
Make sure that your customers get nothing but A+ service when they need help. Trust me, if they don’t word WILL travel fast and that will be the end of your business.
So, there you have it! My basic guide to building a successful website! As with anything you wish to find success in, it takes planning, action and consistency.
