QUOTE(Brian Muller @ Dec 14 2008, 03:48 PM) What is DOS-Deflate? (D)DoS Deflate is a shell script developed by Zaf, originally for use on MediaLayer servers to assist in combating denial of service attacks. However, it was seen to be very effective for our purpose, and therefore was released as a contribution to the web hosting community. (D)DoS Deflate is now used by not only many web hosts, but by many people who run their own servers looking for additional security in dealing with such attacks. How to install Installing DOS-Deflate is one of the simplest out there. Login to your server as root Download the install script wget http://www.inetbase.com/scripts/ddos/install.shRun the installer sh install.sh DOS-Deflate should now be installed. Please note that DOS-Deflate uses APF to ban IPs so you must have it installed for DOS-Deflate to work properly. Customizing DOS-Deflate is very easy. You have to edit /usr/local/ddos/ddos.conf with your favorite editor for example vi /usr/local/ddos/ddos.conf Every setting is explained in the configuration file so I will not go over them as the explanations are quite easy to follow up. Read also "How To Install Apf (advanced Policy Firewall)" if you haven't set up apf firewall in your box. Yet another good guide on protecting yourself from ddos attack. Such attacks are so common nowadays, all website owners should look into protecting their sites from such attacks.

QUOTE(crism @ Dec 21 2008, 02:10 AM) That was very helpful... now I'm wondering...
How effective is this solution, which is basically free, as compared to these anti-ddos hosts who charge anywhere from $400 or $600+ per month for protection from ddos attacks? I realize that one is paying for a hosting package and ddos protection together, but let's say if someone has their own VPS, paying $70/month, and installs the Ddos Deflate - would it do the same job as the much more expensive package?
Even if one had their own dedicated server, let's say paying $160/month, and installs this - then would they get comparable ddos protection at what would amount to be half the cost of these ddos hosts?
Just curious.....
Cris
Software solution can only hold ddos attack up to certain extend. There was no prefect solution when your network really been targeted by massive ddos attack. DOS Deflate can help in mitigating some small scale attack but you must have enough resources (example bandwidth/powerful CPU/RAM etc) to sustain your server uptime during the attack. If not, then its time to find a robust hardware solution.

That would explain why one doesn't hear about Microsoft, Google, or Amazon being taken down by these attacks - they have huge server resources and backups and are prepared for massive traffic as usual day to day business... So basically the average webowner, who doesn't need more than a shared hosting account for normal mom and pop type of business, will need to pay for the extra beefed up resources in the event their site grows in membership and is dependent upon consistent daily uptime to in order to provide results (ROI, Autosurfs, HYIP,etc.). The DDOS Deflate will ward off most small-scale attacks depending on one's server resources. Thanks for your input Brian
