Make sure that the website you are promoting is designed attractively and in such a way that it will get results. You should include your picture, full name, phone number, email and a brief story about yourself at minimum. Is it easy to read and use? Ask for an opinion on this from some friends and family members as well as from some readers on some message boards. Take their advice and make sure that you have a site that is worth sending traffic to.
Create a way for your site visitors to opt in to an email campaign or newsletter list. Make sure that you give your subscribers a reason to join your list and that you offer them high quality, useful and interesting content.
Start a blog. Post to your blog at least three times a week and make the content useful and interesting to your readers. Give them a reason to come back and visit your blog on a regular basis. Offer them the chance to subscribe via RSS. Follow one general theme with your posts rather than just a bunch of random thoughts or information.
Publish a newsletter. Decide how often you are going to release your newsletter and stay consistent with it. Write interesting articles and include content from other writers as well. Make it easy for people to subscribe from your website.
Do a thorough analysis of the meta data, keywords, title tags, alt tags and description of your website. Make sure that you are making it easy for your site to get indexed because of the way it is laid out and search engine optimized.
Do not be afraid to use video. Video marketing is increasing in popularity. People love putting a face and a voice with a person. At the very least make a video introducing yourself.
Get involved with at least two or three social networking sites. Choose the ones which you feel best serve your purposes and where you can find the most like minded people.
Pay attention to what other internet marketers and successful business owners are doing online. Copy their ideas with your own creative twist. If they are successful it is for a reason so take notice of what they are doing and make note of any ideas that you can also implement with your business.
Work on your online marketing plan daily. The key to internet marketing success is working your plan every day and on a consistent basis.
Create a clear written plan of your goals for your online marketing and keep track of where you have posted, the articles you have written, the blogs where you have posted etc. Follow these steps and your online marketing will be effective and successful.

These are probably the most important of the lot. Before i started planning quarterly, monthly, weekly and daily I had no focus, was busy all day whilst getting very little done. Nice post.

Thanks Anna...good post, in a general sort of way. I would like to add a few more things, if I may... ** Anna's comments are italicized, my comments are boldened*** Make sure that the website you are promoting is designed attractively and in such a way that it will get results. You should include your picture, full name, phone number, email and a brief story about yourself at minimum. Is it easy to read and use? Ask for an opinion on this from some friends and family members as well as from some readers on some message boards. Take their advice and make sure that you have a site that is worth sending traffic to. This is good for building credibility and in a lot of ways, the importance of this lies really in what your intentions are. For instance, you don't necessarily have to be a credible source if you are doing information (or search engine) marketing. The reason? Searchers are generally looking for a solution to their problems..if you got it, they won't care who you are or what you do...it is really the WIIFM factor kicking in for them. Provide them a solution to a problem and they will be happy.
There is a huge learning curve here in terms of search engine optimization but search engine marketing is one of the 'oldies but goodies' as far as marketing techniques go b/c there is really nothing more targeted than someone querying "how do I...."...they know what they want..your site shows up in the search results and as a result your traffic increases. More traffic = More Money.
On other hand, if you are trying to build a brand and the brand is you, then credibility is very important. Establishing yourself as an authority is paramount to your success if you are going that route.
All in all....
Selling other people things (like eBay, target, or Bass Pro Shop- Credibility Not that important since you are affiliated with a trusted source....
Selling your own stuff online- Credibility very important.Create a way for your site visitors to opt in to an email campaign or newsletter list. Make sure that you give your subscribers a reason to join your list and that you offer them high quality, useful and interesting content.Very good point. Email marketing is probably one of the quickest ways to making money. However, just like information or search engine marketing, it comes with its own series of pros and cons. I actually wrote a long rant on my blog (see my sig) about email marketing and more importantly connecting with your audience. The bottom line is that if you do it right, you will not only raise your credibility, you will also build a nice size network. Start a blog. Post to your blog at least three times a week and make the content useful and interesting to your readers. Give them a reason to come back and visit your blog on a regular basis. Offer them the chance to subscribe via RSS. Follow one general theme with your posts rather than just a bunch of random thoughts or information.Posting 3 times a week to a blog is not necessarily that high in the importance category. The important part is actually giving your blog a chance to be seen. The solution? Build backlinks. That is not to say that writing and content isn't important. I am just saying that it doesn't matter how often you post...if there isn't an avenue for traffic, you might as well be writing to 'air' around you. Case in point...a buddy of mine has two sites that rank in the top 10 for 'make money online'. One of those sites is a blog with 5 posts. How many hits do you think he gets daily?Publish a newsletter. Decide how often you are going to release your newsletter and stay consistent with it. Write interesting articles and include content from other writers as well. Make it easy for people to subscribe from your website.I love the newsletter idea. Back in the day when I was writing an autosurf newsletter, I had a lot of fun with it. Newsletters can be rather time consuming but if you have a responsive list, they can also be a fun way to connect with your audience.Do a thorough analysis of the meta data, keywords, title tags, alt tags and description of your website. Make sure that you are making it easy for your site to get indexed because of the way it is laid out and search engine optimized.[/quote] This is a bit technical for the average or newbie internet marketer. I wrote a little SEO for beginners post a while back that people can check out. The most important tag that everyone should pay close attention to is the TITLE tag as it gives the search bots the second clue to how relevant your site is and what neighborhood your site should be living in.
There is also this myth that google ranks sites. They don't...they rank pages....but that is for another day altogether.Do not be afraid to use video. Video marketing is increasing in popularity. People love putting a face and a voice with a person. At the very least make a video introducing yourself.
Get involved with at least two or three social networking sites. Choose the ones which you feel best serve your purposes and where you can find the most like minded people. In this day and age, all web 2.0 properties should be considered important. That includes things like social bookmarks, article directories, parasite blogs and sites like hubpages, squidoo, and weebly, and video and podcasts, ect. Think of these as funnels that will eventually siphon into your website. The more funnels you have, the more traffic will come your way.Pay attention to what other internet marketers and successful business owners are doing online. Copy their ideas with your own creative twist. If they are successful it is for a reason so take notice of what they are doing and make note of any ideas that you can also implement with your business. One of the best ways to do this is to use google reader and grab the rss feeds from some of the social bookmark sites with your keyword in tow. This will give you a good bead on what is being talked about during the day. Currently, I subscribe to roughly 300 feeds and have a wealth of information coming my way daily.Work on your online marketing plan daily. The key to internet marketing success is working your plan every day and on a consistent basis.
Create a clear written plan of your goals for your online marketing and keep track of where you have posted, the articles you have written, the blogs where you have posted etc. Follow these steps and your online marketing will be effective and successful.Pro marketers take it a step further....you should be one year ahead with your marketing plan...this includes autoresponder emails, broadcasts, ect.
Essentially, there are three things you should be working on for your internet business...all 3 does something that will effect your bottom line:- Manufacturing Activities- like setting up a email list, building a website, ect.
- Multiplying activities- These are things that will grow your business like advertising, submitting articles for traffic, ect.
- Maximizing Activities- There activities are basically testing, analyzing and tracking activities. For example, taking a sales page and tweaking to pull in more sales, ect.
Anyway, those are my 2 cents on this....thanks for the great post. This post has been edited by drunkonlife: Jan 1 2009, 05:47 PM

I definitely agree on this. If one wants to make money from Adsense, the uglier blog the better. This means that the ads should be on top of the posts and elsewhere that can easily be seen by visitors. And yes, searchers don't care about the blog owner and he may not even finish reading the post once he sees the ads that he needs.

Thanks....there is this presupposition that most IMers make that in order to succeed, you need credibility...and that credibility has to do with your name, face and birth certificate. The reality is credibility can be viewed different ways. For example... Grabbing the number one spot for a keyword shows that google has deemed your site most credible to the keyword in question. Does that mean that the visitor will think you are credible? Probably...if they trust google that is. And adsense marketers know this and as a result the most successful rarely place their face up there with their site because it is really unimportant in the grand scheme of things. On the other side are the IMers who are trying to sell products from their site.... If you are trying to make a name for yourself, then your name is going to be synonymous with your rep. Bad rep = little to no money. Heck, good rep could mean little to money too, depending on who you are trying to sell to and how your visitors are reaching your site.

What you said is actually very true, I have to agree with you. Very good comments there.
