I want to show my wife, kids and friends the quality websites can bring.

My experience shows that in the long run, quality wins out with good strong advertisers, the kind you see on Billboards and Yahoo or Google.

I believe I found the Babylon Affiliate program to pay well and have just been upgraded to start receiving CPD pay for free trial version downloads.

It first starts with patience, just like in life there is no home run, a magic potion, or the missing jewel. It takes hard work, dedication and time to test and retest your advertising campaigns along with content growth.

Once you find a system where your Alexa rankings are improving with traffic, and you have trusted advertisers that pay on time with good commission streams, and then simply build upon it.
Go with what works and watch it grow, if not, than change a little at a time with different content ideas and different advertisers that support your website network.

For many online marketers, conversions rates are a mere fraction of what they use to be. At the same time, there are a few marketers that I've chatted with who have experienced no significant drop in conversions. These are all marketers who have built incredible subscriber loyalty over the years.

For many online marketers, the biggest problem is email deliverability. Their email is simply not getting through. Email is being filtered so heavily today that often less than 20% of a large ezine mailing gets delivered.

There are things you can do to improve your email deliverability, such as run it through a spam checker prior to sending it out. Top mailing list management systems, such as ProfitAutomation.com, have built in systems that allow you to grade an email against the Spam Assassin database prior to sending it. If your email scores higher than a 2, I personally would revise it to lower the score.

I've talked to friends over a year ago, who often confided in me that they sometimes sent out emails and got absolutely NO response. They wondered if anyone even got the emails or read them.

Many savvy marketers also realized that a business totally dependent upon email was not a very solid business. They realized that what they really needed was a database that contained not only names and email addresses, but physical mailing addresses. That way, if something dramatic ever did happen in the world of email, they could just shift their marketing to direct maíl, and still be in business. This is one of the reasons that you started seeing some online marketers offering loss leaders on CD or d v *. It gave them the perfect tool (excuse) to build out their databases. They knew that email could someday go the way of fax broadcasts.

Some of my in-the-know friends have also shared with me that many ISP's now monitor things such as email delivery rates, bounce rates, and open rates. They use readily available data, and if a given ISP or third party list host had a dismal record, they may block ALL email from that source.

That's pretty scary. I was also told that a few well-known list management providers were having emails coming off their servers BLOCKED, or "black holed."

If ISPs are tapping into databases that reveal which mail servers send out a lot of mail that has very low open rates, for example, and blocking email from those servers, that does very well spell the slow death of some email marketers... unless they move their list to other platforms.

Ok, so I just painted a pretty dismal picture for some marketers.

When I was in the military, my bosses always told me that they wanted the truth from me. They insisted that I not "sugar-coat" the facts. However, they also told me not to bring them problems, without also bringing them viable solutions.

Solutions to the email deliverability issue are out there. For example, paid "sender verification" is one that is often suggested.

One that I've looked at many times over the years is some type of direct-to-desktop solution. That's one where your subscribers install tools that allow your communications to tap into technologies not even dependent upon email.

The objection always brought up when discussing direct-to- desktop applications, is that there's only so much desktop real-estate, so a person can only subscribe to so many of these independent channels.

Another solution that I like very much is building your list on a hosted platform, so that communications take place within the system.

A good example of this can be seen on the social networking site Sokule, pronounced "so cool." The Sokule community is built on a platform that looks and feels a lot like Twitter, except that it's built for marketers, so you are encouraged to market on the platform. In fact, there are several built-in features that allow members to monetize their community membership.

While members of many social networking communities tend to de-emphasize getting lots of followers, Sokule is different. Sokule seems to encourage you to get as many followers (called "trackers") as you can in two ways:

1) They have a quasi-currency, called "sokens" that you can provide to other members to reward them for following you. You earn these sokens, and then you provide them to community members as a reward for following you. In a way, you can buy followers.

2) They allow upgraded members to direct message ALL of their followers a maximum of once every three days. That means that in a very real way, when you build a following on Sokule, you ARE building a list.
When you set up your Sokule account, you enter three of your areas of interest. This allows others to search the database for members with like interests, whom they can then track (follow). In theory, this means that when you send out a direct message, your message should be going to people interested in the same topic.

Just as with an email list, you need to respect your trackers on Sokule, and provide genuine value to the relationship.

They seem to be offering a new advertising campaign called CPD which pays you for free trial version downloads based on the country. My site is ranked pretty high in Alexa so I believe I will have to do a test campaign first, but I think it may work. Have any of you tried it with success?

While I do not believe contracts are necessary, I do believe that you should keep all emails and correspondence confirming both the advertising campaign whether it be receiving revenue share, CPC, CPD or CPM income.

Once this is done, make sure the advertiser is paying you the quickest way possible which is PayPal and give them your account number so they don't have to chase you for it. Always make sure that the advertiser has your payment details at the beginning so there is no excuse for timely monthly payments into your account.

Some affiliates choose to work with Google Adsense instead of allowing direct marketers to place ads on their websites. Both options are viable, it just depends on your work load schedule and how much money or CPC/CPM the affiliate can demand.
Advertisers need to be on these content rich websites that deliver the quality traffic through their banners and will pay for it if the factors are all there. While few affiliates have the patience, test campaigns are becoming more popular to earn CPM status.

Please try and work together, because without each other's business income, both lose. Also I respect the demands for higher pay as it is a positive attribute of success, while advertisers will continue to demand the most of your traffic.

I do not agree that people fail, I think people quit.

All of us fall down over and over whilst learning to walk but if we had quit, we would have not learn how to walk.

Marketing is the same, if you quit after falling a couple of times... you will never learn.

Most people who try to make money in MLM or Internet marketing will start out loosing more money than they make until they learn or quit. The sad thing is that about 97% of people quit before they learn.

Don't Overlook One of the Original Social Networks

I have long considered online forums to be an early form of what we now consider to be social networks. They've been around much longer than Facebook, Twitter and the rest, and have allowed users to create profiles and communicate with each other on the web.

They have profile pages, private messages, and public conversation where other users can respond and add to the conversation. They are also indexed by search engines. Do you value forums as social media marketing tools?



In a post a few months ago, I referenced a WMW thread discussing how Google values forums. WMW founder Brett Tabke said Google was devaluing forum links, but there is a bigger picture I think that Jaan Kanellis pointed out (which was also referenced in that article).

"It is normal for Google to favor forum threads for certain queries. Naturally websites do not optimize themselves for long-tail queries that forums are automatically optimized for by way of user-generated content."

Forums have marketing benefits. And they're very much the same as the benefits that come from social media marketing. In fact, I would say that social media marketing plans should include forums in the mix when applicable. When it is about the conversation, that conversation is generally not confined to Twitter or Facebook. That conversation is very possibly being extended into the Blogosphere, and yes...online forums.

Forum participation allows for reputation management strategies, brand awareness tactics, and even link generation, similarly to where social media fits into the SEO equation. Of course, many marketers have known this for ages now, but forums seem to have taken a backseat in the mind's eye to the newer, trendier networks.

But the forums are still there. And they're there in niches. And niches mean relevant and related content, audiences, and engagement.

Of course, there are benefits to forum participation beyond just marketing. They often provide destinations for help with specific problems that can be hard to find elsewhere. They are still a fine venue for networking with other professionals, and just being involved in the conversation often simply translates to staying in the loop for current trends within your industry.
